The first rule of Unread Book Club, is that you don't have to read the book.  In fact, you shouldn't read it.  Let someone else read it for you!

Each month two members of the Unread Book Club will volunteer to read two business related books chosen by the members of the club.  At the next meeting, those members will present their books to the group and answer questions.

Work Nimbly will buy the books, so you just have to bring yourself!  We'll be serving vegetarian lunch too!

This month we're hearing about:

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
Readers of all ages and walks of life have drawn inspiration and empowerment from Elizabeth Gilbert’s books for years. Now this beloved author digs deep into her own generative process to share her wisdom and unique perspective about creativity. With profound empathy and radiant generosity, she offers potent insights into the mysterious nature of inspiration. She asks us to embrace our curiosity and let go of needless suffering. She shows us how to tackle what we most love, and how to face down what we most fear. She discusses the attitudes, approaches, and habits we need in order to live our most creative lives. Balancing between soulful spirituality and cheerful pragmatism, Gilbert encourages us to uncover the “strange jewels” that are hidden within each of us. Whether we are looking to write a book, make art, find new ways to address challenges in our work,  embark on a dream long deferred, or simply infuse our everyday lives with more mindfulness and passion, Big Magic cracks open a world of wonder and joy.

Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer
Foer's unlikely journey from chronically forgetful science journalist to U.S. Memory Champion frames a revelatory exploration of the vast, hidden impact of memory on every aspect of our lives.

On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, Foer found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories.

Moonwalking with Einstein draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top "mental athletes," he learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by Medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, Foer discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories.

Art Party to Celebrate Ed Obermeyer

Nosh, drink, and incredible art are in store for this evening! Come join us to celebrate the newest artist's work on display at Work Nimbly.  This is a private reception, so you'll need to RSVP by clicking here.

Ed Obermeyer's acrylic paintings reflect his deep passion for all things ocean related and the delightful world of gardening.

When asked to describe his style of painting he says, "that if Vincent Van Gogh were reincarnated as an Aborigine from Australia, was a surfer, and a pinstripe artist, that would be me."

A black gesso base coat forms the framework for the patterns that are developed with stripers, daggers, and swirlers, and a host of other custom brush tools. Through years of diligent practice, he has developed his own signature style where the contrasts of light and dark are played against one another.

Art Reception featuring Joseph Ash

Art Reception featuring Joseph Ash

We are so excited to feature Joseph Ash, owner of BAEPLEX, as the next artist in our“pop-up” gallery series.  The “pop-ups” offer the opportunity for coworkers and visitors to experience new art several times a year, not to mention there's some additional exposure for the artist.

Joe is an avid world traveler and his paintings are heavily influenced by Chinese, Japanese, and Korean architecture and art.  Much of his work is layered with Asian symbolism and aesthetics, and his process is as unique as his art.  He starts by meditating on a concept for some time, occasionally sketching variations and working through the strokes before he even touches a brush. “Each of the pieces represents a still expression of the life we live every day,” says Joe.  “I believe that art, though busy and sometimes messy, can still be a peaceful and powerful expression of yourself.”

Watching him paint is a process too. Using primarily acrylics and natural inks, Joe brings martial arts techniques into his work as he paints using the expression of his whole body.

As usual we'll have tasty nibbles and refreshing drinks. Joe will do a small demonstration and create a one-of-a-kind piece that will go home with one attendee.

The work will be on display at Work Nimbly through the end of June.

This week we're going to get together an practice saying, "No."  Saying no is something we all need to do, but...it's sooo difficult.  Our Cobbler extraordinaire Natalie suggested that it might be a good idea to practice saying no to each so it will be easier the next time we have to say it to our clients, potential clients, and those pesky pro bono gigs.
